The WA branch took an excursion to the Alstom railcar fabrication plant where Metronets X'trapolis C-series electric multiple units (trains) will be assembled, tested and finished. Alstom will assemble a total of 41 complete 6-car sets over the coming 5 years.
These electric trains utilise overhead 25,000 V AC power and is collected via the pantograph. This is stepped down to 1000 V AC, which is then rectified to about 1400 V DC. The DC voltage supplies inverters, or variable frequency drives supply three phase AC to the powered wheel sets (bogies). There are 8 powered bogies per 6-car set.
